The online clip is about 9 minutes long, the full length film is 70 minutes. Available on DVD from the gallery. Definitely a slice of its time, bombastic as a vintage wildlife explorer film, it has as a interesting “day in the life” bit on Weegee and Edward Weston, as well as a history of photography. Won an Academy Award to boot.

If you’re in San Diego, the Museum of Photographic Arts is presenting a show on the film’s director, Lou Stoumen, through May 17. Stoumen endowed the Museum for an award in his name, the $40,000 Stoumen Prize. This year’s winner is Mikhael Subotzky. Subotzky has done a lot of work on South African prisons.

One of the pioneers of CG, Juan Siquier started creating images before software and hardware became as sophisticated as it is today. I am a modernist at heart, but his images, with their painterly quality, are quite irresistible. They appear like photographs which have had touch ups and photoshop filters added. The level of detail is utterly mind-blowing. They are all created using the tools of his trade… a computer, a Wacom tablet, and a mouse…

Juan starts with a photograph of his subject. He studies it until all the details are become a part of his visual psyche. Can you tell which one is the photo and which one is the render?
